Rare autograph of Henry Laurens Dawes, a prominent figure in the Civil War era. This piece includes Dawes' signature removed from a 19th-century Congressional Free Frank cover, marked "H. L. Dawes, Mass."

Dawes was a key Defender of President Abraham Lincoln and played a significant role in anti-slavery and reconstruction measures. Later, he chaired the commission overseeing tribal affairs of the Five Civilized Tribes of Indians. The document is inlaid to another sheet, measuring 6” x 9”, and is in VERY FINE condition. An excellent addition to any autograph, manuscript, or ephemera collection.
